ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

Aries is the first star sign. People born under this sign are good leaders. Their planet is Mars. They are ambitious and hard-working and often achieve a lot in their lives. They are very honest and loyal friends but they want their friends to be loyal, too. They are sometimes in a bad mood.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

People born under Gemini are intelligent. They are often interested in philosophy and literature but they are outgoing, very lively and active. They have a great sense of humor, love parties and a social life. They fall in love often and easily and can love more than one person at a time.

FASHION FOR THE FUTURE

In four different laboratories across Great Britain, scientists are already working on fashion for the future. Today we visit them and talk about their ideas.

  1. First we go to a small university building on the outskirts of Liverpool. Jocelyn Brown, the head of the department, informs us about their project: clothes which smell. As Brown explains, people can save on antiperspirants and perfume because the clothes produce a nice, fresh aroma.

  2. The next place to visit is a charming village on the coast of Scotland. Our host here is Mandy Wilson who manages the project for the University of Glasgow. Their idea is clothes with a tiny electrical heating system to keep the wearer warm. When it is hot, you can switch the system off and clothes are cool again!

  3. In Wales, scientists are busy with large sheets of paper-like material. They are producing clothes which the user can paint and decorate any way they like. What's more, it is possible to wash the clothes and paint them once again. Mary Smith, the director of the project, also stresses the fact that these clothes are environmental-friendly.

  4. But a truly modern idea of clothing is waiting for us in the capital of England, London. Nick Heldon of Fashion Co. presents us with something which looks like a Roman toga, a set of different belts, and a pair of scissors. We put the toga on and can do whatever we like with it: for example, out it very short, or put a belt on.

So the fashion industry is getting ready to face the future. In the meantime, we should try and earn more because it seems that all the ideas are rather expensive.

Now we are ready to start.

Welcome to London, one of the most exciting cities in the world. There are a lot of things to see and to do in London. Here are some ideas.

  1. London has many beautiful old buildings and monuments. See Big Ben and the houses of Parliament, which stand on the River Thames near Westminster Abbey. Go down the river to the Tower of London, and visit St. Paul's Cathedral too.

  2. People come from all over the world to visit the British Museum. For art lovers, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has a beautiful collection of paintings, and so has the Tate Gallery in Westminster.

  3. Go to Oxford Street, where there are several large department stores. If you like small shops, there is an attractive shopping centre in Covent Garden. And London has over 100 street markets.

  4. London is well known for its many theatres: try and get tickets for the National Theatre, a modern building containing three theatres on the south bank of the Thames.

  5. If you like classical music, go to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall or the Royal Festival Hall. You can hear excellent jazz at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho.

  6. London has many excellent restaurants, serving food from almost every country in the world. Go to Soho or Charlotte Street, try food at Italian, French, Chinese, Indian, Greek... sometimes it's hard to find an English restaurant.

Now we are ready to start.

  • Have you ever attended Eisteddfod?

  • No, I haven't. What is it?

  • It's the most exciting Welsh traditional festival devoted to music and poetry.

  • When is it held?

  • Annually early in August.

  • Is it an old custom to hold this festival?

  • Oh, yes. This tradition dates back to early history, and there are records of competitions for Welsh poets and musicians in the 12th century.

  • When did you attend it last?

  • This year when my uncle invited me to stay at his house in Caernarvon. We got up early in the morning and went to a large grassy field just outside the town.

  • Were there many people there?

  • Oh, yes! The streets were full of people and in the field there was a large crowd round a circle of big stones with an 'altar stone' in the middle.

  • What is this altar stone used for?

  • The Chief Druid stepped on the altar stone and made a long speech in Welsh. I didn't understand a word of it but the audience loved it.

  • Were there any songs or poems performed?

  • Yes, there were. A great number of songs and poems. And at the end of the festival there was a very interesting ceremony of awarding the bard of the year.

  • You mean the winner of the competition?

  • Yea. He was awarded the prize. It was the Crown, specially made for the occasion.

  • I think I should go there next year. I like ancient traditions, besides I've never been to Wales. You have 20 seconds to check your answers. You will hear the text again.

Now we are ready to start.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the wonderful game of chess. But have you ever thought about where it came from and when? Well, we think chess has its origin from either in Afghanistan or in what is now northern India and dates from some time before 600 AD. That's the oldest written reference to the game, but there is some evidence that chess could go back 2000 years.

Let's first look at the rules. The rules of standard chess are fixed and internationally agreed upon, but there are some variations to the rules in various parts of the world. One variation of chess is called Shogi and is played in Japan. Another variation is played in China.

The version played by Europeans and Americans today travelled through Iran to Italy and Spain and it was there by about 1000 AD. The game was taken to Scandinavia by the Vikings and it had reached Central Europe by 1400 AD. The rules haven't changed since then.

The chess pieces we use today are known as Staunton pieces. Staunton was an English chess master in the mid 1800s and he designed the chess pieces we use today all over the world.

The first official chess tournament was in 1866 in London. To restrict the length of game and limit the time which players spent on each move, they used a particular type of clock known as a 'sand clock'.

You have 20 seconds to check your answers. You will hear the text again.
